Plan view of the
VENUS high transmission beam line utilized for this research
This research program combines the development of beam transport simulation models with beam line experiments in order to improve the understanding of the properties of the extracted ion beam from ECR ion sources. The simulation of ion beam extraction from an ECR plasma ion source is particularly challenging and interesting as the initial density distribution at extraction is not known and the extracted, space charge dominated beams are composed of multiple ion species (charge states). Additionally, these beams are extracted from an asymmetric plasma surface in a region of high magnetic field. In the last three years we have developed a unique modeling capability that is powerful enough to simulate multi species extracted from inhomogeneous plasma surfaces. Currently we are developing a more realistic model for the initial beam conditions using a semi-empirical approach. By combining magnetic field tracking, experimental measurements and beam diagnostics, we were able for the to predict measured beam patterns.
